About Us
Best Life ABA is a family-owned and locally run ABA and social skills provider in San Diego, CA. As parents ourselves, we know that everyone wants their children to be able to live their best lives, develop meaningful friendships, and feel happy and fulfilled.
Best Life uses evidence-based ABA techniques to teach and reinforce new skills so that your child can be part of your community, make friends, and live a healthy and productive life. We specialize in the Verbal Behavior approach and we strive to create programs that promote assent and center on your child’s motivation.
Our Mission
Using connection, compassion, and collaboration, Best Life ABA meets families where they are to move them forward with a positive ABA experience.
Our Vision
To make effective, evidence-based ABA services accessible so that families can participate in their communities to the fullest extent possible. To provide highly-individualized care based on each family’s unique needs. To empower families by providing comprehensive training and education. To improve quality of life and well-being for everyone involved.
Our Values
Inclusion
Everyone deserves a seat at the table. Whether someone needs a little ABA, a more comprehensive program, or has other barriers to progress, everyone should be able to access ABA in a way that suits them. Everyone deserves to live their best life.
Compassion
As parents ourselves, we understand the challenges, emotions, and learning that come with parenting. It’s not always pretty, and it’s not always easy. We are here for you through every step of the process.
Collaboration
We are in this together. You know your family’s needs better than anyone else. We work with you to create a treatment plan that is person-centered, strengths-
based, and adaptable.
Connection
Connection is what we all live for—it’s the basis of life. And that’s why we emphasize connection at Best Life ABA. What this means is that we forge a meaningful relationship with you and your family so that we can best serve you.
Empowerment
We provide comprehensive education and training to empower families to feel confident in guiding their child’s treatment.
Community Giving
We are committed to the community. We pledge to give at least 1% back to the community through mutual aid and supporting local 501(c)(3) nonprofits in the San Diego area. We believe in access to care and to our community for our Autistic clients, kids, family members. We believe in equality for all and lifting up those around us.
Our Team
Ashley Hokanson, M.E.d., BCBA
Founder and Excutive Director
I began my career as a special education teacher, where I learned that it’s way harder than it should be for parents and caregivers to get quality, compassionate, and specialized care for their children. As a social-justice-minded person, committed to making real, impactful change, I believe that adults and children alike should have access to everything they need to live a fulfilling life.
I shifted focus to Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), because ABA can provide much more individualized support exactly where the child is at developmentally, rather than curriculum requirements. I have now worked in the San Diego ABA community for 15+ years, where I’ve worked with children of ages, backgrounds, abilities, etc.
I knew that I wanted to take my experience as a Clinical Operations Director and create something that would serve the San Diego population specifically. This city is over-run by huge corporations that don’t prioritize the family, don’t collaborate effectively with parents, and often have waiting lists or limited space in their centers.
I started Best Life ABA as an antidote to these big box agencies; we are a small boutique agency that caters to your family’s unique needs and includes you in your child’s treatment plan. I come from a sports background, and teamwork has always been an essential part of who I am. I believe that parents should be involved in their children’s ABA, and our clinicians take a teamwork approach to working with families to meet their goals.
As a mom to two littles myself, I understand how important it is to be able to trust the people working with your children. To be able to trust that they are invested in your child’s progress, empowerment, and happiness. That’s why I started Best Life ABA, and that’s what makes me excited to come to work, day in and day out.
Carrie Muscheck, M.S., BCBA
Clinical Director
Nothing brings Carrie greater joy than watching a child discover that learning can be fun. Teaching has been at the heart of her career for nearly three decades, and she
continues to bring that same passion into her work as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst.
Carrie earned her Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education from the College of Charleston in 1997 and spent many years working with children before being introduced to the field of Applied Behavior Analysis. Drawn to the science of learning and the meaningful impact ABA can have on families, she earned her Master of Science in Applied Behavior Analysis from National University and became a Board Certified Behavior Analyst in 2021.
Since entering the field of ABA, Carrie has worked with children and families across home, school, community, and center-based settings. Her areas of interest include early intervention, communication development, caregiver training, and helping children build the skills they need to be successful in their everyday lives.
Carrie believes that no two children are alike, and neither should their therapy be. She is passionate about creating individualized programs that reflect the unique strengths, needs, and goals of each child and family. She values strong relationships with caregivers and believes some of the most meaningful progress happens when families and clinicians work together as a team.
In addition to supporting children and families, Carrie enjoys mentoring clinicians and helping them develop the skills and confidence needed to provide high-quality services. Whether she is working directly with a child, coaching a parent, or supporting a member of her team, her goal remains the same: to help others learn, grow, and succeed.
Carrie considers it a privilege to be part of each family's journey and remains committed to providing compassionate, effective, and meaningful support every step of the way.
